The adaptation to the loss of a limb is an extremely difficult process.  During this process the pelvis, spine and head on top of the spine must shift and adapt to a new position.   Muscles compensate, some muscles atrophy from disuse and some muscles hypertrophy from more use.  According to research back and pelvic pain is as common and severe as phantom pain is, in people who have had leg amputations.
